For generations, math education has focused on memorizing formulas and repeatedly solving problems for exams.
Computational math is an important part of mathematics. The problem is focusing on only computation within the much broader world of math.
The fact that over 70% become "Math-avoidant" learners shows that change is needed.
Experts say, “Math is a nation’s competitiveness.” Looking at countries such as China, the U.S., and Europe that have successfully transformed math education, we need to move beyond exam-only problem-solving and toward advanced math education—observing nature, strengthening mathematical thinking and reasoning, and learning how to apply it to real life.
Then math can become a subject children look forward to, not one they give up on.

EDUCATION 이라는 단어는 라틴어 educere에서 시작되었습니다.
e(밖으로) + ducere(이끌다) : 교육은 지식을 가르쳐서 채워넣는 것이 아니라,

이것이 소비자 중심, 학습자 중심의 교육이며, 이것이 이루어졌을 때 아이들의 재능은 세상 밖으로 나오게 됩니다.

The word EDUCATION comes from the Latin educere.

수학은 단순히 문제를 풀고 공식을 암기하는 학문이 아닙니다.
수학은 자연의 질서를 발견하고, 그 원리를 이해하는 도구입니다.
어린 시절, 잠자리를 조용히 잡으려 다가가 본 경험이 있습니다.
분명 앞을 보고 있었는데도, 우리가 뒤에서 다가가면 어느새 날아가 버립니다.
왜 그럴까요?
잠자리는 약 3만 개에 이르는 홑눈이 모인 겹눈 구조를 가지고 있습니다.
이 눈은 렌즈 시스템과 빛을 감지하는 세포로 이루어져 있으며, 거의 360도에 가까운 시야를 확보합니다.
이 구조 덕분에 잠자리는 포식자를 빠르게 감지하고 먹이를 정확하게 추적하며 공중에서 안정적으로 방향을 제어할 수 있습니다.
이러한 시야 구조와 감지 원리를 분석한 기술은 국방용 레이더 시스템 개발에 응용되었습니다.
또한, 잠자리의 정교한 날갯짓과 공중 제어 능력을 연구하면서 헬리콥터와 드론 기술이 발전했습니다.
Math is not simply about solving problems and memorizing formulas.
Math helps us discover the order of nature and understand the principles behind it.
As children, many of us have tried to quietly catch a dragonfly.
Even when it seems right in front of us, it suddenly flies away the moment we approach from behind.
Why does that happen?
A dragonfly’s eyes are made up of about 30,000 tiny lenses.
These lens-like units detect light and provide a field of view close to 360 degrees.
This structure allows dragonflies to sense predators quickly and change direction instantly while flying.
Studying this visual structure and flight principles has influenced advanced radar detection systems.
Research on dragonfly wings and flight control has also contributed to helicopter and drone technologies.

이처럼 자연의 생명체를 관찰하고 그 안에 숨어 있는 원리를 수학적으로 분석해 인간 기술로 구현하는 것을 생체모방기술이라고 합니다.

라스북이 수학책이라고 들었는데 왜 숫자나 공식, 도형, 계산이 없나요? I heard LASBOOK is a math book—why doesn’t it include many numbers, formulas, shapes, or calculations?
지금까지 부모님들, 우리 아이들이 학교 학원 학습지에서 배운 수학은 입시를 위한 연산 수학입니다. 물론 연산 수학도 수학의 일부입니다.

For many parents and students, math learned at school or in after-school programs is often focused on test preparation and repetitive calculation drills. Computational practice is important, but many children lose interest when they don’t understand why they are learning it.

많은 부모님들께서 라스북 책은 너무 좋은데, 아이가 꼭 읽었으면 하는 책이 맞기는 한데, 문제풀이가 없어서 시험에는 도움이 되지는 않을것 같은데요? 라는 질문을 하십니다. 입시공화국에 살고 있는것이 우리의 현실이기 때문에 어쩌면 너무나도 당연한 질문입니다. Many parents love LASBOOK and want their child to read it, but ask: “If there are no problem sets, will it really help with tests?” In an exam-driven environment, it’s a natural question.
라스북 K시리즈는 유아부터 초등용입니다. 우리나라는 유치원, 초등학교가 시험을 보지 않습니다. 시험을 안 보는데도 시험에 안나온다는 걱정을 할 만큼 시험에 대한 막연한 압박에 시달리고 있다는 슬픈 현실이 반영된 질문이기도 합니다. 물론 라스북 안에는 공식, 계산 같은 연산 수학 문제들이기 때문에 이같은 질문을 하실 수 있습니다.

그 말을 바꿔 생각하면, 왜 배워야 하는지, 이걸 배워서 어디에 적용할지, 이것으로 어떤 도움이 되는 것을 만들어 낼 수 있을지를 안다면 수학은 어렵고 재미없는 과목이 아니라 재미있고 궁금하고 더 알고 싶은 학문이 될 수 있다는 의미이기도 합니다.
The LASBOOK K Series is designed for learners from early childhood through elementary school. In many countries, young children do not take formal math exams—yet test anxiety can still begin early.
